If you have a new lump, mole, or other growth on your skin, it’s understandable that you’re concerned. However, many skin growths are benign, which means the growth is noncancerous. Still, if you have a new growth on your skin, it is always best to schedule a consultation to be sure and put your mind at ease.

There are specific signs to watch for in determining if a growth is benign or malignant. Here are a few factors to keep in mind when discovering a new growth on your skin.

A New Mole on Your Skin

Moles are one of the most common types of skin growths. They are small, raised bumps in the skin, typically darker in color than the surrounding skin. Some people are born with moles, while others get them as a result of sun exposure. Most of the time, moles are benign. However, it is important to pay attention to your moles, especially if it is getting bigger, changing shape or color, itching, or bleeding. You will need to schedule an appointment with our office if you notice any of these.

Soft Tumors

The word “tumor” makes anyone feel worried. But a tumor is just an abnormal mass of tissue, more often than not, benign. Lipomas are one common type of benign tumor. These typically grow slowly and vary in size from a few millimeters to the size of a baseball or bigger. Lipomas are not generally painful but can be removed if a patient opts to do so.

What Does a Cyst Look Like?

Cysts are another type of benign growth that are flesh-colored and firm and typically occur on the face or upper body. Cysts have a center and are typically filled with pus. Sometimes a cyst will break open, and this can cause inflammation and infection, which requires scheduling a doctor’s appointment. If you have a cyst, you can opt to have it removed.

Are Skin Tags a Concern?

Skin tags are small, flesh-colored growths commonly found on the neck and arms. Some women get them during pregnancy. Obesity is another risk factor for skin tags. However, skin tags are not dangerous. They may get irritated from wearing clothing or jewelry and can cause them to get worse. Many people opt to have them removed because they do not like the way they look or the feel of them.

When Should You Be Concerned?

As mentioned above, many skin growths are not an indication of any dangerous condition. However, some skin growths are cancerous, so it is always best to schedule an appointment with our dermatologist when in doubt. Our Jacksonville Skin Cancer Specialists provide each patient with comprehensive counseling on the diagnosis and treatment of skin cancer, a thorough skin examination from head to toe, and an individualized treatment plan based on evidence-based medicine.
