We provide each patient comprehensive counseling on the diagnosis and treatment of skin cancer, a thorough skin examination from head to toe, and an individualized treatment plan based on evidence-based medicine.
More than 5 million Americans are diagnosed with skin cancer each year. Therefore, you may wonder what your odds are for getting skin cancer.
The answer to that question has a lot to do with understanding your risk factors. However, it’s essential to keep in mind that the risk factors in and of themselves do not guarantee that you will or will not get it. But one thing is clear, lowering your risk is always a good idea. If you understand the factors, you can better protect yourself.
Brandon T. Beal, MD, is an expert in the diagnosis and treatment of skin cancer. He provides each patient comprehensive counseling on the diagnosis and treatment of skin cancer, a thorough skin examination from head to toe, and an individualized treatment plan based on evidence-based medicine. He is also an expert in Micrographic Surgery (Mohs Surgery), which is the treatment that provides the highest cure rates, greater than 99% for most skin cancers.
Risk Factors for Skin Cancer
People of all colors and ethnicities can get skin cancer. Even if you’ve never experienced a sunburn, you can get skin cancer. However, specific characteristics create a greater risk. These include:
- Blond or red hair
- Blue or green eyes
- Lighter natural skin color
- Skin that easily burns or reddens
- Skin that has freckles
- Certain types or a large number of moles
- Family history of skin cancer
- Personal history of skin cancer
- Older age
Lifestyle also plays a factor. Smokers are more likely to develop squamous cell skin cancers. Certain chemicals like tar, coal, paraffin, and certain oils, may increase the risk for certain types of non-melanoma skin cancers. And third, people who work outside or who choose to spend a lot of time in the sun are at a heightened risk.
